This year’s Summer Reading Program theme was “Reading is So Delicious”. We were all super excited for this theme because it was so easy to come up with ideas and everyone knows that food is one of the easiest ways to get people to come to your library program. There were many more program ideas than we had time or money for, and we also had a plan to clean out the hoarder’s heaven we call the craft room. Over the next few weeks I’ll highlight all of the programs we had over the summer – and there were a lot. My busiest week, I ran 5 programs – including Storytime and a Performer, but 3 programs a week for 8 weeks was about average.
We ran an 8-week program, starting memorial day through the end of July. Our kids go back to school really early – August 12th, so we got to end even earlier. The reading portion of our program is pretty simple. Kids Ages Baby through 8th grade read any 8 books and they get a free book to take home along with a pencil. They can only do the program once. This year we had over 2200 kids start the program and about 900 finishers. Our numbers were a little down from last year, but I suspect thats because one of our branches that was closed is now open and everyone’s numbers were re-distributed amongst the library system.
All in all, I’d say it was a successful program, and we continuously had to re-stock our “Cool Treats” refrigerator made out of a real refrigerator box and lots of paint and love.
