What?! More NHPIs in CA than HI?!

this post also appears at The Wrong Half

Well, its official.  According to data released by UCLA’s AASC, there are more NHPI’s in California (284,000)  than in Hawaii (280,000).  Washington state comes in a far third with 58,000 NHPIs.  In Hawaii, NHPIs comprised 22% of the population.

what the what!

i dunno if this is good or bad, but its a definite trend that has been in the works for years.

Some other NHPI stats taken from the AASC report:

14%

The percentage of single-race Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders 25 and older who had at least a bachelor’s degree. This compared with 28 percent for the total population.

86%

The percentage of single-race Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders 25 and older who had at least a high school diploma. This is not statistically different from either the percentage for the total population or the percentage of Asian alone, both 85 percent.

4%

The percentage of single-race Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders 25 and older who had obtained a graduate or professional degree. This compared with 10 percent for the total population this age.

Well, I’m glad we’re graduating HS, but the higher education stats are FAR below the national average.  We need to really work on encouraging NHPIs to attend institutions of higher education — much like the SMC Pacific Islander Higher Education Conference in May
