Here are some statistics about Native Hawaiians in general:

  • A Native Hawaiian is “a person having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii.”  Confirmation of ancestry is based upon legal documentation in the forms of Birth Certificates and Marriage Certificates.
Certificates must be produced until a blood relation before 1959 is provided (Ho’oulu Hawaiian Data Center).
  • A total of 401,000 people reported being Native Hawaiian Alone or in Combination with Some Other Race in the 2000 Census.  Samoan and Guamanian were the next largest Pacific Islander groups with 91,000 and 42,000 respectively (Greico 8).
  • Over half of all people reporting Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander lived in two states, Hawai’i and California (Grieco 4).
  • The Pacific Island Population exceeded 0.3% in seven states, including California, at 0.7% of the total population (Grieco 4).
  • In 2004, Native Hawaiians made up 0.26% (743,000 people) of the U.S. Household population according to the American Community Survey (1).
